QUESTION:
I am unable to start the game. It patched okay but the screen never goes black, or the patching procedure appears to have stalled at 99%.

ANSWER:
Looks like the game is failing to initialize. The first thing to check here is your video card. Make sure it is capable of the video mode 1024x768x32. To check this, you can open your control panel, choose Display, click the tab labelled 'Settings' then use the slider bar to move to 1024x768. Now under the menu color depth, you should be able to select 32-bit, or "true color." If you can't do this, your system cannot run starport until you upgrade your video card.
If your video card can do this mode, then it may be your video drivers. In many cases, re-installing the latest video drivers for your video card will solve this problem. To install the latest version of your video driver, first find out the make and model name of your video card, for instance, "NVidia G-Force 2." You can usually find this information in your windows control panel, either under "Display"-->"Settings" or under "System"-->"Device Manager." Now open your web browser go to the website of your card's manufacturer, for example, www.nvidia.com. Locate the place on their website where you can download drivers for your card. Make sure you get the right drivers for your card model, for example "G-Force 2", and for your windows version, for example Windows XP, Windows 2000. Download and install the drivers.

QUESTION:
The game has problems connecting to the server. It sits there saying "Looking for updates" but never finds them. Eventually it gives the error: Couldn't connect to the Starport server(error 10060)

ANSWER:
This may indicate the Starport server is down. If you have always run Starport successfully in the past, it is likely that the cause of this problem is the server being down. In this case, please just wait 5 or 10 minutes and try again.

If the server is up (and it is intended to be up 24/7), this could be a network error on your side. First make sure your network is up (just test if Internet Explorer is working). If it is and you still have the problem, you may need to adjust your firewall settings. Make sure the following ports are open:
TCP: 7000, 7797, 7807, 7817, 7827
and UDP: 7798, 7799, 7808, 7809, 7818, 7819, 7828, 7829

QUESTION:
I just downloaded starport but when I clicked on the shortcut to play, a window popped up and said "The GECLIENT.EXE file is linked to missing export DDRAW.DLL:DirectDrawCreateEx." What should I do?

ANSWER:
Re-install DirectX. You can find DirectX to install at this URL: Microsoft DirectX Download
That ought to fix the problem. If not, another thing you can try is to locate a file called DDRAW.DLL on the internet and download it. Perhaps google for "download DDRAW.DLL". Download and save this file to your hard drive, then copy it over to the /system subdirectory of your /windows directory. So, if your Windows directory is like C:\Windows then copy DDRAW.DLL into C:\Windows\System\ and it may work then.

QUESTION:
When I look at the galaxy map, the lines connecting the stars are wrong.

ANSWER:
Go to the starport directory on your computer, usually something like MyComputer \ C: \ Program Files \ StarportGE. Locate a file in that directory named by the name of the server you're playing on followed by the name of your character followed by .dat. It would be named something like MilkywayJohn.dat. Delete that file. Run the game again and see if that fixes things.

QUESTION:
The patching is not working, or something in general is wrong

ANSWER:
You may wish to try re-installing S:GE. To do this, use the following procedure:
1. Uninstall the game by opening your control panel, choosing Add/Remove Programs and selecting Starport on the list that appears
2. Make sure the entire directory that Starport was in on your hard drive is deleted. It is usually C:\Program Files\StarportGE\ and if you're not sure use the start menu's "Find" tool and search for "StarportGE" and see if it comes up with directory of that name. If you find a directory called StarportGE then delete that directory and all of its contents.
3. If you still have the file you downloaded to install the game, then run that file. Otherwise, go to the official web site StarportGame.com and follow the links to download the install file again. You can "open the file" or "save it to disk" when downloading. If you chose "save to hard drive" for the download then locate that file and run it once the download completes.

QUESTION:
I get bad flickering on the screen, sometimes I can't even see the bottom of the screen because it is always black from the flicker.

ANSWER:
Something is wrong with your video drivers or video set-up, or possibly your monitor set-up. Follow the steps listed in the very first question on this FAQ to re-install your video card drivers. If this doesn't fix the problem then you may need to adjust your display settings in the control panel or on the devices themselves. Contact the manufacturer of your video card and monitor for help. Usually this problem is a caused by a failure between your monitor and video card to agree on a refresh rate (like 60 hertz). You might consider trying different refresh rates in the control panel (Display / Settings / Advanced / Monitor).

QUESTION:
I can't place down biodomes or turrets on planets. It tells me that the placement is blocked, even though my ship is in a valid place to put down the turret or biodome.

ANSWER:
Something is slightly faulty with your internet connection set-up. Sometimes a router is to blame for this, or maybe you access the internet through a local hub that is over-stressed. In any case, this problem means that your connection to the game server is half-lost. Exit the game and re log on, or perhaps disconnect your computer from the internet entirely and re-connect it. That will fix this problem when it happens.

QUESTION:
I would like to make a Starport mod, or run my own server. Can I do this?

ANSWER:
No. The server software is not available, and modding is not currently supported.
